Under the crooked trees of Pumpkin Hollow, Sorrel pressed both mitteny hands around her waffle cone and whispered, “One scoop of moon-chill before the last bat squeaks.” That was her private challenge. The cone was warm from the hill path, and the sweet vanilla smell was turning drippy at the edges.
She floated past pumpkins with dry, scratchy stems and a stone that sighed cold fog around her ankles. A bat dipped low. Sorrel reached up with her little sprinkle spoon, scooped silver chill from the crescent moon, and—oops—left three waffle squares behind for the fog-mice nibbling at the gate.
When she returned, her cone sparkled with cold, but the chill was too big to keep. She tapped it into the pumpkins, the stars, even the bats’ tiny wings, and the whole hollow shivered with happy light. Next time you spot Sorrel’s raised scoop beneath the crooked trees, you’ll know why her joy had to be shared before the last bat squeaks.
