Every morning, Liora pressed a smooth gray pebble under the fence rail and listened. It made a tiny hum against the wood, soft as bees inside clover. She wanted to know which patch of pasture was truly hers before the herd moved at moonrise. Her brother, Halden, snorted at the pebble. “It’s just a rock.”
Until one day, a lavender butterfly landed on it, and the pebble answered with a clear ping. Because of that, Liora followed the sound past daisies and grass that brushed her knees like cool ribbons. Because of that, Halden followed too, quiet now, as each fence post gave back the same note.
At the far corner, the hum rose from the ground, from the rails, from their own touching noses. Liora set the pebble beneath a daisy and knew it had not been pointing away. It had been teaching her the sound of staying. If you visit the pasture corner, listen for the tiny hum under the fence rail.
