Every day, before the jays began their rusty screeching, Nico tapped the rim of his cap and counted the oak leaves pressed around his stem. He wanted a game fast enough for the beetles, bold enough for the crickets, and tricky enough to make the whole hollow shout. One breezy morning, he invented Acorn Dash: bounce one acorn off a leaf vein, loop it around a pebble, and stop it before it bumped his cap.
Until one day, the acorn struck a twig with a crack and shot down the slope. Because of that, Nico lunged after it, sliding through cold moss and sending leaf crumbs flying. Because of THAT, beetles, crickets, and even a sleepy newt joined the chase, whooping, “Left! Leaf! Log!” until the acorn spun back to Nico’s own roots.
Finally, Nico planted it beside the biggest oak leaf and declared the finish line moved to home. The hollow thundered with tiny feet and wing-buzz cheers, and Nico felt the forest floor fit around him like a cap fits rain. Next time you spot the acorns near his leaves, can you tell which one made the wild first dash?
