Every day after lessons, Seren raced her own echo through the crystal cavern under the east cliffs. She had set herself one rule: ring the little copper bell before her last “ha!” bounced back. Her boots slapped stone, her lantern smelled faintly of hot tin, and the crystals answered, tink-tink-tink, like laughing spoons.
Until one day, her echo did not return. Because of that, Seren stopped so fast pebbles skittered past her toes. Because of THAT, the tall crystals shifted with a grinding sparkle and opened a passage she had never seen, dark as ink beyond her lantern. “All right,” she whispered, grinning, “new finish line.”
She darted in, ducking low points and leaping cracks that breathed cold air. At the end waited the missing echo, caught inside a blue crystal, tapping the bell’s rhythm from within. Seren rang the bell against the crystal—clang!—and the whole cavern sang her name back. Next time you spot her lantern, can you hear the tink-tink-tink that told Seren she was exactly where she belonged?
