🎨 How to color it

Try a lavender gown and golden crown for the princess, a teal-and-cream spotted egg, mossy green leaves, and warm gray cave rocks. Use sharp colored pencils for the egg spots, fern fronds, hanging vines, and tiny flowers, then fill the larger cave walls with slow, even strokes. For a secret glow, shade pale yellow around the cracked lines on the egg and let the cave get cooler blue-gray toward the stalactites.

The story behind this coloring page

The Egg That Taught Echoes — Under the whispering hill, Tavia pressed a plain shell button in her pocket and stepped past roots that smelled like rain. Read the full story →

Under the whispering hill, Tavia pressed a plain shell button in her pocket and stepped past roots that smelled like rain. She had come to ask the cave why it never answered children, only grown-ups with lanterns and serious boots. The button had belonged to her first baby cloak, and she rubbed it whenever her knees went wobbly.

Deep inside, a spotted egg sat in a nest of glossy leaves. Hairline cracks crossed its shell like tiny roads. Tavia knew the secret then—don’t tell the ministers—that the cave was holding every child’s question inside that egg. If she spoke too loudly, the answer might shatter. If she said nothing, it might sleep forever.

She put the button against the egg and whispered, “May I?” A soft tap-tap came back, smaller than a pebble drop. The egg opened, and the cave repeated her whisper in a hundred brave little voices. Ever since, caves answer children first, especially the ones who bring small courage in their pockets; next time you see those cracks, listen for Tavia’s tap-tap.
