🎨 How to color it

Layer the princess’s mask in peacock teal and antique gold, her fan in champagne cream, the feathered hand mask in emerald, and the balcony rails in polished silver. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny triangles, rays, beadwork, and curls, working from the outer arches inward so your hand does not smudge the fine details. Try a midnight-to-lavender gradient behind the stars and sunbursts to make the warm metallic dress panels glow.

The brass band threw bright notes up to the vaulted ceiling, and Valencia crossed the balcony with quick silver steps, carrying a painted fan that smelled faintly of sandalwood and stage dust. Below her, guests spun in beaded gowns, never noticing the small satin envelopes she had slipped beneath empty plates: passage coins for musicians, train tickets for tired seamstresses, opera seats for the night porters who always swept after midnight.

Her feathered mask bobbed in her other hand as she counted the last gift by touch. The fan snapped open with a crisp paper thunder, and a narrow seam loosened along one rib. Tucked where no jeweler, tailor, or courtier had looked was a folded receipt, old and soft as moth wing: PAID IN FULL—FOR EVERY LAMP IN THE WEST WING, SIGNED, THE CLEANING CREW.

Valencia laughed so hard her jeweled mask glittered against her cheeks. All evening she had been hiding generosity in the corners, and all evening someone else’s secret kindness had lit the room she used to hide it. She lifted the fan toward the chandeliers, and the ballroom blazed back, answering brass with gold, sandalwood with light, quick silver steps with applause.
