Before dawn had a color, Aster left the warm mud hollow to keep his private challenge: wait on the cold lily stones until the marsh showed its hidden gold. Mist dampened his whiskers; cattails clicked like tiny doors. A heron’s shadow crossed, and his paws ached from stillness, but he did not step back. When the first sun broke behind the reeds, every dark pane of water lit from underneath, and a thin golden path trembled straight to him.
