🎨 How to color it

Layer emerald green on the monster’s scales, burnished gold on the patterned armor, ruby red on the torch flame, and cool gray-violet on the castle stones. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny brickwork, window leading, armor curls, and tail bands, saving broader marker strokes for the belly plates and tower roofs. Try making the stained-glass window glow from pale yellow at the round sun center into blue and pink panels around it.

Before the keep had evening torches, Sorrel worked in the cold stone alcove behind the great window, filing brass leaves and twisting wire until his claws smelled of metal dust. He wanted one torch that was truly his, not borrowed from the armory, but every flame in the castle guttered blue and went out when he brought it near. The old masons whispered that fire disliked monster-made things; between us, the masons had never looked closely enough.

At dusk, Sorrel held his unfinished torch under the round glass sun above the door and heard a tiny tick, tick, tick, like a beetle tapping from inside amber. He pried loose the rim he had polished that morning. Hidden behind the glass sat a seed of fire, no bigger than a lentil, wrapped in a scrap of his own copper shaving. Sorrel set it into the torch cup, packed it with wax he had poured himself, and the flame rose steady, warm as bread crust. Ever since, the castle torches are lit from handmade work, because fire, proud little secret, prefers a place shaped by claws.
