Under the striped awnings of the frost market, Grindle shaved curls from a scrap of river ice, fitting them into the top of his walking staff until the snowflake clicked like a tiny lock. He had made the staff himself from broomwood, old button wire, and three unnecessary flourishes, which were naturally his favorite part. Pine needles tickled the air with resin, glass baubles chimed softly overhead, and every time Grindle polished the ice, he admired how official his nonsense looked.
He reached into his mitten for the last silver pin and found, instead, a folded note tucked in the seam: INSPECTOR OF HANDMADE WEATHER, APPROVED. Beneath it sat a crumb-sized stamp he did not remember carving, though it bore his own curly initials. Grindle laughed so hard his beard shook the holly berries loose. He pressed the stamp onto the ice, lifted his staff, and a polite little flurry spun out—just enough to powder the market baskets and make his handmade snowflake look gloriously guilty.
