🎨 How to color it

Color the capybara a warm chestnut brown, the floating oranges bright tangerine, the rock ring cool gray, and the snowy pines deep evergreen with pale blue shadows. Use sharp pencils for the small orange peels, pine needles, and ripples, then switch to smooth marker fills for the capybara’s round body and the open slopes. Try a gentle steam effect by leaving the wavy lines white and shading soft lavender around them.

Under the whispery pines, Taro nosed through crusty snow for one ripe yuzu to warm his evening bath. The bath at home was plain stone and puddle-cold, and his toes clicked like pebbles when he stepped in. Then a tiny snow monkey appeared on a branch, holding a yellow fruit that smelled like sunshine and pepper. She did not chatter. She only pointed uphill, as if sharing a secret too good to say out loud.

Taro followed. Hush—crunch. Hush—crunch. Snow slipped into his ears, and twice he had to wait while icicles dripped from a leaning cedar. At the ridge, the monkey traded him the yuzu for his last sweet reed. “Fair,” Taro puffed, though his stomach made a small grumble. Beyond the ridge, steam curled from a ring of stones, and more yuzu bobbed in the water like little moons.

Taro sank in slowly, patient as the mountain itself. The heat wrapped his paws, the fruit bumped his chin, and the monkey winked from a pine. He had wanted one yuzu, but he carried home the secret path—and the memory of steam rising under the whispery pines.
