🎨 How to color it

Color the sea turtle’s shell olive green, its flippers seafoam, the branching coral coral pink, and the little fish bright yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the shell plates, coral squiggles, and tiny shell ridges, then switch to markers for the turtle’s larger flippers. Try making the bubble trail fade from pale blue at the bottom to almost clear near the top.

Every day, Rafi nudged flat shells across the sandy lane behind Needle Coral, trying to build a sled that could skim over bumps without tipping. His flippers ached from tying sea grass knots, and each crash puffed grit into his nose.

One day, a clattery blue crab tumbled out of a sponge chimney, wearing a belt of pearl buttons. “Your runners are too smooth!” she snapped, tapping his crooked shell frame. Because of that, Rafi traded his plain shell runners for ridged clam halves. Because of that, the sled grabbed the current so hard it zipped straight toward the sea urchin posts, rattling like rain on a roof.

At the last blink, Rafi twisted the sea grass reins he had braided himself, and the sled curved neatly between the coral towers. The crab whooped. Tiny fish scattered like sparks. Next time you spot the starfish on the sand, imagine Rafi’s proud grin as he smooths grit from his handmade sled behind Needle Coral.
