Under the attic eaves, Soren tapped his six points against the storage box, listening for the tiny clink of his missing silver hook. Without it, he could not hang beside the pine boughs where the cold air smelled of resin and dust. A mouse named Brindle sniffed the shadows behind a crate. “Nobody checks the empty middle,” she whispered. Soren peered through his own hollow center and saw a speck of gold tucked in the carved rim, warm as a held breath.
To reach it, he rolled off his soft square of tissue and crossed the rough plank floor. Splinters scraped his blue paint; a cobweb stuck to one point like gray lace. He nudged the speck free and found not a hook, but a folded ember-note: FOR THE SMALLEST WINDOW, WHEN THE FROST COMES IN. Soren knew the cracked round window above the rafters, where Brindle’s nest shivered all night.
He gave up looking for his hook and wedged the ember-note into the crack. Gold light spread over the mouse nest, quiet and honey-warm. In the morning, Brindle brought a bent pin and twisted it into a loop for him. If you study the open center closely, you may still catch the glow Soren found while listening for that tiny clink.
