🎨 How to color it

Color the muscle car cherry red, the American flag red, white, and navy blue, and the star streetlamps bright gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny confetti, fireworks sparks, grille lines, and the letters on the “4TH OF JULY” and “PARADE” signs. Try shading the car windows pale sky blue so the flag and bunting look extra bold against them.

Every July morning, Callum tied three lucky ribbons to the shifter of his uncle’s rumbling SS and counted the parade floats by engine sound. The ribbons looked like scraps, but they came from his dad’s first parade banner, and Callum would not let one flutter loose. Then, as fireworks cracked over town square and the car rolled between star-shaped lamp posts, a gust snapped the parade marshal’s flag from its pole.

Because of that, the marching band lost its signal and wobbled into the pie sellers. Because of that, the mayor’s pony cart stopped crosswise, blocking the veterans’ float. Callum felt under the seat for his fallen ribbon bundle and touched a folded cloth instead—an old American flag, soft as worn denim and smelling faintly of cedar. “Use this,” he whispered.

His uncle raised it from the window, big and bright, and the band found the beat again. Nobody heard Callum’s whisper under the horns and cheering. Later, his ribbons were still knotted tight, right where they belonged. If you spot the waving flag above the SS, keep Callum’s secret: a scrap of cloth had saved the whole parade.
