🎨 How to color it

Color the popcorn kernels buttery yellow, the striped tub cherry red and cream, the movie film strips slate gray, and the starbursts bright gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the small kernel faces and the narrow filmstrip boxes, then switch to markers for the wide tub panels. Try shading the popping burst from orange at the center to pale yellow at the points so the popcorn feels warm and fresh.

Under the balcony booth’s round lamp, Cleo pressed one old ticket stub flat with her palm and traced its tiny scalloped edge onto a paper sign. She wanted the new popcorn tub to look handmade, not printed by the rattly office machine downstairs. Butter steam curled around her wrists, smelling salty and sweet, while kernels tapped the glass like soft rain. She snipped, glued, and brushed each letter until FRESH & HOT seemed to sit up proudly.

As the tub filled, the ticket stub slid from under her elbow and landed against the warm metal scoop. Instead of burning, it gave a papery hush. Then Cleo heard clapping—not from the empty seats below, but from the stub itself, as faint as moth wings. Every torn ticket in the little drawer had saved one clap from someone who had loved a movie there.

Cleo tucked the stub behind her handmade label. The next scoop burst higher, puff after puff, each kernel wearing a round grin in the golden light. “You remembered,” she whispered. And when the first audience climbed the balcony stairs, they smelled butter, saw her letters shine, and somehow began smiling before the show; if you spot the proud little kernels, you might hear the ticket stub’s soft clap under the balcony booth’s round lamp.
