🎨 How to color it

Color the hedgehog’s face warm tan, its spines chestnut brown, the maple leaves orange and gold, and the spotted mushroom cap brick red. Use sharp colored pencils for the many spine points and leaf veins, then switch to light marker strokes for the tree trunks and open path. For a playful twist, make the hedgehog’s leaf trail alternate between fiery fall colors and one sneaky bright green leaf.

Every evening, Quillby waddled the same root path, nose low, counting the crunchy leaves before supper: seven maples, two birches, one acorn cap that smelled like rain. He wanted a game no one else had tried, so he invented Leaf-Sneak Challenge: cross the path without making one crackle. He tiptoed, grinned, and held his breath.

Until one day, a striped beetle popped from under a leaf and shouted, “New rule: mushroom is home base!” Because of that, Quillby had to pass the loudest pile in the woods. Because of THAT, three sparrows leaned from a branch, waiting for the first embarrassing crunch.

His paws prickled. He had never played with watchers before. Finally, Quillby took one brave, tiny step onto the edge of a maple leaf—crrrip! The sparrows cheered as if he had planned it. Quillby laughed so hard his spines shook, then hopped leaf to leaf, making the grandest crackly parade to mushroom home base. Next time you spot the acorn cap, can you find the place where Quillby stopped holding his breath?
