Every day after school, Maren polished the little round mirrors in Bay Three and fitted scraps of foil into her cardboard “smile light.” She wanted it to shine into the practice tooth model without wobbling. The room smelled like mint paste and clean rubber gloves, and the big chair hummed whenever she bumped the foot pedal.
Until one day, the light sputtered out right before the student showcase. Because of that, Maren crawled under the chair to trace the cord, her homemade tool belt clinking. Because of that, she heard a papery tick-tick inside the pedal where nobody ever looked. She popped the cover loose and found a tiny silver reflector, left from an old lamp repair.
“Hold still, bright bug,” Maren whispered. She clipped it behind her mirror, taped the foil smooth with her own careful hands, and aimed. A clean beam leaped across the tooth model, showing every twisty root. Next time you spot the mirror in her hand, imagine the minty room humming as Maren’s smile light shines without wobbling.
