Behind the tall grass at the Easter meadow track, Luca tucked a crayon-smudged napkin under his helmet strap and listened for the start bell’s clank. He didn’t need another practice lap; he needed the little X on the napkin, the one his baby sister had drawn after whispering, “That’s where the track laughs.”
So Luca rolled out past the safe tire stack, past the jellybean-sweet snack tent, and onto the back curve where daisies brushed his wheels. The price came quickly: one painted egg bumped loose from the rack and wobbled into the grass. Luca braked so hard the dust puffed like flour. From under the egg came a tiny ch-ch-chuckle, not from a person, but from the road itself, where a hidden spring made pebbles hop.
“Secret found,” Luca whispered. He carried the egg back with mud on his gloves and a new loop in his head: the Laughing Bend, right before the finish arch. Next time you spot his wave, see if you can keep the secret of where the road giggled first.
