🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid tail sea-glass teal, the curling frosting waves turquoise, the shells peach and lavender, and the starfish bright coral. Use sharp colored pencils for the tail scales, bubble circles, shell ridges, and tiny starfish dots, then switch to smoother marker fills on the wide cake tiers. Try a gentle ombré on each frosting wave, fading from deep blue at the curl to pale aqua at the crest.

Past the clack-clack of crab cymbals, Bryn zipped through the reef amphitheater with a pouch of pearl sweets bouncing at her hip. She wanted every little drummer, lantern wrangler, and shy sand-sweeper to find a treat after the tide parade, so she tucked pearls into wave curls and behind sugar shells while the big conch horns practiced their booming notes.

The sea-cake smelled like vanilla and salt spray. Bryn climbed the coral steps, slid one pearl beside a starfish, and hid three more under the scalloped edge of the cake stand, where nobody bent low enough to peek. “One for the helpers,” she whispered, and her whisper made the bubbles tremble like tiny bells.

Then the mermaid-tail topper gave a soft click. From between two painted scales slipped a ribbon of kelp-paper, already dry, already tied with a silver thread. On it, in neat crabby letters, was written: FOR THE ONE WHO HID SWEETS FOR US LAST YEAR. Bryn laughed so fast a bubble popped on her nose. The parade thundered in, bright and brassy, and beneath the scalloped stand the secret pearls waited with the secret note—can you spot the place where generosity hid first?
