🎨 How to color it

Color the sea turtle’s shell olive green, its patterned flippers seafoam, the curling waves turquoise, and the round sunrise golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the small shell plates, face spots, bubbles, and little fish, then switch to broader strokes for the open sun and sky. Try making every spiral cloud lavender on the inside and peach along the outer curl, like the morning is playing a quiet trick.

Under the sunrise breakers, Pip tucked a plain black pebble beneath one flipper and paddled toward the first bright line on the water. The pebble clicked against his shell—tik, tik, tik—like it was counting him forward. Foam curled above in white ribbons, and the sea smelled sharp and salty. “No peeking,” Pip told a nosy silver fish, who immediately peeked twice.

Pip had brought the pebble from the deepest sand patch, where everything was cool, blue, and serious. He planned to give it to the morning, because the morning was always showing off with gold rays and pink clouds. A plain pebble, he thought, would teach it some manners. He placed it on a smooth current and waited for the sun to notice.

Then the pebble opened one tiny eye. It was not a pebble at all, but a baby shadow-snail wearing a perfect pebble hat. “Thank you,” it whispered. “I needed a ride to breakfast.” Pip snorted bubbles so hard that three fish spun in circles. The snail munched the sunlit algae, the waves clapped slap-slap above, and Pip knew this silly, salty place had saved a seat for him. Next time you spot the little fish near the swirls, dare them not to peek at Pip’s very important pebble.
