🎨 How to color it

Give the mermaid’s tail sea-glass teal, her flowing hair coral pink, the shell harp pearly lavender, and the singing fish sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the harp strings, tiny scales, music notes, and bubble circles, working from the outside edges inward so the details stay crisp. Try shading the note-filled bubbles in pale blues and purples, as if each song she plays makes a different glowing color.

Under the snap-swish of tall ribbon coral, Zadie tightened the last strand on her shell harp with her own two hands. She had set herself a bright, fizzy challenge: play one whole reef song using only strings she had spun from silver kelp and polished smooth with sand. The harp smelled faintly of salt and moon shells, and every pluck made the water tickle her wrists.

She swept her fingers across the strings—plink, prrill, ploom! The notes raced upward in curling bubbles. Little dartfish bounced around them, not leading, not copying, just adding quick chirps like pebbles skipped across glass. Zadie grinned so wide that a bubble popped on her nose. “I made that sound,” she whispered.

Then the biggest bubbles turned, showing tiny music marks inside, as if the song had been writing itself in the water all along. The fish had not come to hear Zadie’s harp; they had come to read the path it opened. Together they sent the tune through the coral garden, bright and fast, and if you follow the floating notes, you can almost feel that first snap-swish of ribbon coral.
