Under the old wooden stands, Wes knelt in the dusty smell of popcorn salt and dry leaves, searching for Coach Ivo’s silver whistle. He wanted it back before the next snap; without it, the game clock ticked in a nervous clack-clack. A loose board creaked. From the dark gap behind the steps, someone whispered, “Wait for the second cheer.”
Wes froze. A small kid in a cap slid out and handed him not the whistle, but a bent program with three yard numbers circled: 40, 30, 20. “I found this where the whistle fell,” she said. Wes raced out, but every number was crowded with shoes, elbows, and shouting. He paid for his hurry with a smear of mud across one knee and had to stand still at last, breathing cold air through his face mask.
Then the first cheer rose and faded. The second cheer came softer, from the left bleachers, where a tiny flash winked beneath a bench. Wes pulled the whistle free and tucked it into Coach Ivo’s hand just as the huddle broke. On the next play, he waited one heartbeat longer than usual, followed that soft cheer, and slipped through the opening. Next time you see the packed stands, can you spot the place where the second cheer began?
