Every Saturday, Rafi counted tree shadows before lunch and promised himself he would tie a message to the kite string. His fingers always stopped at the knot. The park smelled like cut grass and peaches, and the big oak clattered its leaves like a crowd waiting for a show.
Until one day, the wind yanked the kite hard enough to rattle the picnic basket. Because of that, Rafi grabbed the handle instead of the string, and something clicked under the woven bottom. Because of that, his friends tipped the basket sideways and found a flat brass whistle taped where nobody ever looked, with tiny words scratched on it: BLOW WHEN THE KITE POINTS EAST.
Rafi’s mouth went dry, but the kite snapped east over the winding path. “I’ll do it,” he said, and blew. The whistle shrieked silver-bright. Far off, hidden chimes answered from the trees, and every leaf seemed to jump. His note flew up the string at last, brave and small. Next time you see the basket by their knees, can you imagine the whistle still buzzing under the woven bottom?
