Under the flapping birthday pennants, Tavi kept one hand on the cool goalpost and counted the thumps of other kids’ cleats. He wanted to kick just once before the cake whistle blew, but the field looked too wide, too bright, too full of watching faces. Then a ball rolled past the orange cone and into the clover beyond the line. No one chased it. Tavi swallowed, stepped out from the net’s shade, and went after it.
The grass outside the cones brushed wet against his socks. Behind the banner pole, a kid in green shin guards held the ball still with one foot. “I’m new,” she said softly. “I don’t know where to stand.” Tavi’s cheeks warmed, but he pointed to the open space near the middle. “Come with me.” He paid for his courage with a muddy knee when he slipped turning back, and the new kid laughed so gently that Tavi laughed too.
When they returned, Tavi didn’t hide by the post. He tapped the ball forward, a small rolling pass, and the game opened around him like a gate. Next time you see the goal net and the bright cones, see if you can spot the place where Tavi stepped out from the cool goalpost.
