🎨 How to color it

Try a royal blue CHEER jersey, white block letters, silver-and-blue pom-pom strips, and a sunshine yellow megaphone rim. Use sharp colored pencils for the many narrow pom-pom ribbons, then switch to markers for the larger shirt, shorts, and megaphone panels. Add a soft blue shadow inside the megaphone cone so his call feels like it is echoing outward.

Under the dusty equipment balcony, Arlo held the old megaphone and waited for the sleepy mascot below to lift one fuzzy ear. The pep bell would ring soon, but his first chant came out thin as a shoelace. He tried again. Only a papery rustle answered from inside the cone, soft as dry leaves.

A tiny cricket stepped onto the rim, carrying a clear pebble on its back. “Not yet,” it chirped. Arlo lowered his pom-pom and listened. The cricket tapped the pebble once. Plink. The sound rolled around the megaphone, warmer and wider each time. Arlo wanted to shout right away, but he counted the quiet taps, one by one, while the balcony smelled of rubber mats and lemon polish.

At last the cricket tucked the pebble into the small round cup deep inside the cone. Arlo lifted the megaphone, called gently, and his cheer floated down like a ribbon of bright air. The mascot’s ears popped up. Ever since, every cheer megaphone has kept a little echo cup inside, for voices patient enough to wait; next time you see that round shape in the cone, listen for the soft plink under the dusty equipment balcony.
