🎨 How to color it

Color the smiling star butter yellow, the crescent moon pale silver, the bat smoky purple, and the twisting branches warm brown with coppery leaves. Use sharp colored pencils for the leaf veins and bat wing lines, then fill the star’s broad points with smooth, even strokes. Try a deep blue night background so the star’s rosy cheeks and bright eyes feel extra warm.

Between the thornwood branches, Caro tucked in all five points and set a challenge: before moonset, he would make one quiet creature laugh without making a single loud sparkle. The grove smelled of bark dust and cold leaves. Even the crescent moon only smiled with one corner, as if guarding a secret. A bat named Vell drifted overhead, wings whispering like paper fans, and Caro tried a tiny wink, a wobbly spin, and a silent tumble through the forked limbs.

Nothing. Vell only pointed to a hollow knot in the oldest tree. Inside, Caro found a hidden jar packed with giggles—leaf giggles, moon giggles, even a squeaky bat giggle—saved because the grove had once been too shy to laugh out loud. Caro pressed the jar to his chest. Warmth rushed through him, bright and fizzy, too big to keep.

“Share it,” Vell whispered. So Caro opened the jar. The giggles flew into the leaves, the moon’s smile grew rounder, and Caro’s cheeks turned rosy from holding so much joy. Ever since, young stars who visit thornwood groves wear soft blush marks, proof that happiness is brightest when it spills out; next time you see Caro between the branches, can you spot where the first giggle escaped?
