🎨 How to color it

Color the shooting star’s rocky head warm umber, its long flame trails golden yellow and orange, the ringed planet teal with lavender rings, and the big stars lemon yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many little dots, moons, and spiral galaxies, then switch to markers for the wide swooping comet trails. Try making the main streak brighter near the rock and softer toward the pointed tail, as if it has been glowing for a very long ride.

Before the hush-bells chimed, Fenn scraped his stony chin against a warm sky current and aimed for the ringed planet’s dusty hoop. He wanted one spoonful of ring dust for his dull tail, and he wanted it before the fast stars noticed. The path smelled like cold sparks and tasted faintly of metal. Halfway there, his fiery trail snagged on a tiny spiral shell drifting backward.

“Not so quick,” whispered the shell. Inside sat a star-snail with silver feelers, polishing one grain of dust. Fenn puffed. Waiting made his edges itch. Still, he held still while the snail rolled the grain across his tail—scritch, scritch, shine. It took seven whole breaths. In payment, Fenn carried the snail safely past a windy galaxy swirl.

When Fenn returned, his tail was not louder or bigger. It glowed in thin patient lines, bright enough to find secret paths home. If you follow the longest streak past the rocky head, you might spot where Fenn learned to wait before the hush-bells chimed.
