Under the glass roof of the moon conservatory, Iris pressed gold paper flat with her thumb and wished for one last piece: a handle for her handmade lantern. The night smelled of damp leaves and cold metal, and every silver drawer in her work nook clicked empty. “Just one curve,” she whispered.

She stepped beyond the warm lamp circle into the vine aisle, where moon-ferns brushed her sleeves with chilly tips. A thorn snagged her ribbon; a bead from her lantern frame bounced away with a tiny tick. Iris nearly turned back, but a spiral vine on the old crescent trellis looked oddly loose. She twisted it once. A secret brass handle slid out, thin as a smile, hidden where no drawer had ever been.

Back at her table, Iris bent the handle to fit, tied on the rescued bead, and lifted the lantern herself. Its star-shaped sides threw curls of light across the ceiling, just like the vine aisle.
