🎨 How to color it

Color the hiker’s backpack teal, the Keep Going sign sunny yellow with navy letters, the winding path warm tan, and the mountain pines deep green. Use sharp pencils for the sign words and flower petals, then switch to broad marker strokes for the hills and open sunrise rays. Try a peach-to-gold glow around the smiling sun so the trail feels like it is getting brighter after Mile 1.

In the cool pine smell before breakfast, Dax rubbed the dented silver whistle tied to his backpack strap. He wanted the high canyon to send back the words he had practiced all week: “Keep going.” At home, the whistle had belonged to his big brother, and its tiny scratch shaped like a moon made it feel brave in Dax’s palm.

He left the picnic flat and climbed the switchback, shoes crunching dusty pebbles. At the first bend, a gust snatched his paper map and tossed it into a thornbush. Dax could reach it only by giving up one shoelace, which caught and frayed. Farther on, his water sloshed warm, and the whistle stayed quiet against his chest.

At Mile 1, Dax lifted the whistle—but a wren was singing from the signpost, small and silver-clear. He waited. The sun warmed his face. Then the hills answered, not with a shout, but with a long golden hush. Dax smiled and whispered, “Keep going.” Next time you trace the winding road, see if you can find the quiet mile where the hush answered first.
