🎨 How to color it

Layer deep burgundy into the roses, antique gold along the “Be Brave” blackletter edges, cool slate on the pointed arches, and dark ivy green on the winding leaves. Use sharp pencils for the tiny filigree inside the letters and trace each vine curl from its outer thorn back toward the stem. For a dramatic twist, shade the background from pale moon gray at the top to smoky violet near the lower roses so the gold lettering feels lit from within.

Under the west arcade, Galen kept a square of brass warm in his palm, planning to hammer it into a cloak clasp before the midnight market closed. He only needed one clean strike, one piece made by his own hands, but the public anvils stood beyond the comfortable lamp of the bookstall, where iron rang like bells and strangers watched every mistake.

At the rose gate, a thorn-seller in a black veil offered him a coil of vine wire. “It bites unless you mean it,” she said. The wire pricked his thumb, and a bright bead fell on the brass. Galen nearly turned back. Instead, he paid with his last candle stub, bent the wire around the metal, and pressed the thorn marks into a border. Each crooked notch caught the forge-light; each small sting told him where his hand had been.

He returned before dawn with no candle, no smooth clasp, and no wish to hide it. On his cloak, the brass held its rough rose of hammered dents, warm as a secret: under the west arcade, Galen kept a square of brass warm in his palm.
