🎨 How to color it

Layer the gothic arches in cool slate gray, give the climbing roses deep burgundy petals with mossy green leaves, and set the crescent moon in antique ivory. Use sharp pencils for the clustered tracery, thorns, and gravestone crosses, saving broader marker strokes for the stone path and cloud banks. For a dramatic twist, blend a smoky indigo night sky behind the bats while leaving tiny white halos around the stars.

By the last bell, Liora had one errand left: cut a moonlit rose for the ink she used on names no family came to remember. Her desk in the gatehouse was warm with lamp oil and clove tea, but the best roses grew beyond the iron gate, where the path sweated cold and bats stitched black thread through the clouds. She tucked her shears into her sleeve and stepped out. A thorn caught her cuff; she let the lace tear rather than wake the sleeping hinges.

Near the tallest arch, someone whispered, “Not that one.” No figure stood there, only the smell of rain on stone and a ribbon of mist by a small, neglected marker. Liora chose the smaller rose beside it. When she clipped the stem, one petal fell onto the nameless grave, bright as a secret. She left the whole bloom there instead, then wrote a name in the frost with her bare finger, though the cold bit hard enough to sting.

Back at the gatehouse, her ink stayed plain. But in her torn cuff she found a black feather tipped with silver, and from then on every forgotten name dried with a faint crescent shine.
