Behind the mapmaker’s curtain, where graphite dust tasted faintly of rain, Tamsin set herself a private dare: cross the whole drafting alcove without lifting her silver stylus. She began at a triangle, slipped around a freckled circle, and followed every sharp lane that seemed to whisper, left, left, sharper left. The more she chased the route, the more the corners multiplied, as if curiosity had elbows and was using all of them.
Then one square, tired of being mistaken for a door, curled its path inward with a dry little scrape. Another copied it. Soon the squares were not exits at all, but keepers of turns, folding each wandering line safely toward its own middle. “Stay crooked,” Tamsin told them, very softly, and they did. Ever since, spirals keep their corners so a curious line can run away without ever leaving home.
