🎨 How to color it

Try barn red for the tilted wooden barn, sage green for the tractor, soft pink for the pig, warm brown for the horse, and creamy wool for the two sheep. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight carrot tops, leafy curls, roof boards, and animal faces, then fill the larger bodies with smooth layered strokes. For a lively twist, make the sun glow from lemon yellow to orange while keeping the background leaves in alternating olive and mint greens.

Before the tractor’s metal rim warmed in the sun, Quince opened her pocket notebook and set herself one quiet challenge: collect seven kinds of morning happiness before the rooster’s second call. The barn smelled of dry boards and sweet hay; the silo shone like a pale drum. She drew the cow’s soft huff, the horse’s lip-tickle over the fence rail, the pig’s mud-bright grin, the sheep’s woolly hush, the chick’s peeping commas, and the carrot tops whispering in their basket.

At the seventh mark, Quince noticed the farm had not been waiting to be counted. The cow was leaning just so for the horse. The pig had nudged a cloud-shaped sheep forward. Even the chick stood in a laurel of leaves, as if every creature had chosen someone else’s best angle. “Oh,” Quince said, and laughed so warmly the pitchfork seemed to ring.

She tore the page from her notebook and pinned it to the barn door, where everyone could see everyone else being seen. By noon, the joy was too large for one pocket notebook, and it shone around the tractor’s metal rim warming in the sun.
