Under the warm lamp, Tess slid her half-ruler from the notebook pocket and tapped its tiny marks: tick, tick, tick. The last mark was gone, and without it she could not measure the hush before the classroom bell. She stepped past the blue notebook hills, between red apple domes and pencil towers that smelled like cedar shavings. A curly black path tugged at her shoes. “Just one mark,” she whispered.
At the star sticker crossing, the path asked for a price: one line from her favorite page. Tess tore out a skinny stripe, and the paper made a soft sigh. The stripe curled into a bridge over a puddle of ink dots. On the far side, a heart-shaped door opened inside the ruler itself, glowing with yellow pencil-dust light.
There, every lost line waited—not missing, just making room. Tess chose a new mark shaped like a tiny star and carried it home. Now the bell’s hush sounded like tick, tick, welcome, and if you follow the curly path between the apples and notebooks, you might find where her ruler keeps its hidden room.
