Before the lamps dimmed in the shell arcade, Tavi set a tiny challenge: add one line of gold where no one would think to look. The corridor smelled of salt-polished stone and cool kelp. Fan shells rose in neat rows overhead, and every carved angle caught a thin green gleam. Tavi moved slowly, counting breaths between bubbles, choosing a bare crescent above the coral where the morning current would pass without applause.
Stroke by stroke, the gold followed the curve. It did not shout. It warmed the edge of each groove, slipped through the little maze marks, and rested where sleeping shrimp would never know a brush had been there. Tavi smiled at that. “Just enough,” they whispered, and the words made one bubble ring like glass.
Then the first dawn ray entered from the far arch and turned the crescent into a quiet moon. Its light spilled downward, not onto Tavi, but onto every closed shell below, laying a soft stripe across each hinge so they would open gently when the tide called. The gift had been watched after all—by the water, which carried the shine onward. Tavi drifted beneath the one line of gold where no one would think to look.
