Under the noon-bright surface, Quill tucked a bubble under his chin and tried not to laugh. The bubble held his newest joke: a tiny raspberry sound, a squeak, and then the rude little pop of a clam sneezing. He wanted to save it for the whole pod, so he swam slow loops through the shell spiral, where the water smelled faintly of salt and sun-warmed stone.
The spiral answered him with polite music. Scallops clicked. Snail shells hummed. A striped conch gave one dignified toot, then another, as if practicing scales. Quill’s bubble wobbled against his chin, desperate to escape. He rolled beside the curling current and whispered, “Not yet, you ridiculous thing.” The current curled tighter, combing his sides with silky ribbons of water.
Then a voice came from inside the biggest shell. “Is that the missing punch line?” Out peeked a crab no larger than a sand dollar, wearing a crown made of bubble foam. Behind him, every shell in the spiral had arranged itself like an audience. They had not been making music at all; they had been warming up to laugh.
Quill let the bubble go. It squeaked, raspberried, sneezed, and popped. The shell choir exploded into toots and clicks so merry that even the wave curled over laughing, and Quill carried the sound outward, too big to keep, from the shell spiral under the noon-bright surface.
