🎨 How to color it

Layer the peacock’s body in deep teal and sapphire, color the heart-tipped eyespots with emerald and gold, and give the curling vines a soft sage green. Use sharp colored pencils and work feather by feather, saving the tiniest dots, scallops, and nested lines for last. For a luminous twist, blend a pale lavender shadow behind the fan so the teal body and golden eyespots feel quietly radiant.

At the warm center of the mosaic aviary, Selwyn made a game for the hour before dusk: follow one line with a fingertip, step wherever it led, and return before the fountain finished its silver dripping. He wanted the smooth blue bead from the outer rail, the one that matched the evening tiles. The path took him past fern shadows, brass perches, and the soft peppery smell of marigolds, until the bead slipped from his palm and clicked into a crack.

For a while he listened to the fountain counting without him. Then a peacock opened his fan, not loudly, just with a hush like silk being folded the other way. In each feather’s small heart, Selwyn saw the same curve he had followed outward, turning back toward the center. He came home without the bead and laid a fallen feather beside his cup. It held more blue than he had gone looking for, and the aviary, from rail to fountain, felt like the warm center of the game.
