The silk smelled of sun-warmed grass; his needle clicked, clicked, until a closed water lily tapped his wrist. Inside, where no one thought to look, lay a folded map of curls, dots, and scalloped lines, shining with pond-light. “So that’s your secret,” he whispered, and copied every mark by hand.
