🎨 How to color it

Layer the fish in sunset orange and coral pink, the branching coral in warm peach, the seaweed in deep teal, and the bubbles in pale aqua. Use sharp colored pencils for the fish’s tiny scale arcs and fin stripes, then switch to smoother blending in the larger stained-glass background pieces. Try a soft turquoise-to-navy gradient behind the fish so the round bubbles look like little summer moons.

At the edge of the glass reef, Sorrel kept a pearl button under her fin and counted the tide chime’s far-off notes: three clear rings, then foam-silence. She wanted one chime for her quiet alcove, where summer light broke into amber squares and the water smelled faintly of salt and crushed kelp. The button had closed her first travel pouch; it was nothing, and it was everything. Still, she slipped past the coral gate, letting the current tug coolly at her scales.

The chime maker lived beyond the waving weed, where bubbles ticked against stone like tiny spoons. Sorrel paid with the button, and for one breath her fin felt bare. “Keep the sound,” the maker murmured, fastening a shell bell to a strand of sea grass. On the way home, the bell rang only when Sorrel swam forward. By dusk, her alcove held one clear note, and Sorrel held the quiet space where the pearl button used to be.
