🎨 How to color it

Try deep plum for the tall roofs, weathered teal for the porch railings, pumpkin orange for the jack-o’-lantern, and smoky gray for the crescent moon and clouds. Use sharp pencils and color one pattern family at a time—roof scales, wall florals, porch arches—so the zentangle details stay crisp. For a secretive glow, layer pale yellow inside only the arched windows with staring shutters and leave the spiderweb attic cool and silvery.

For seven autumns, Iris had sharpened her pencils at the same desk, copying old wallpapers for people who wanted their houses to remember themselves. At midnight she set herself a smaller dare: walk beyond her warm lamp, cross the iron gate of Brackenholt, and trace the one pattern no photograph had ever caught. The path clicked under her boots like loose teeth. Bats stitched the sky. At the porch, the brass knocker left a cold crescent on her palm, the price of being admitted.

Inside, every room offered a nearly familiar design—shells on the stairs, vines in the hall, little eyes worked into the shutters—yet the missing pattern kept slipping away. Then the house breathed, not a groan but the dusty sigh of a place making room. On the inner threshold, where visitors always paused, Iris found a blank strip of wood waiting. She drew the curve she had used all her life in the margins of invoices, a small spiral turning homeward. By dawn, Brackenholt had added it everywhere. Iris returned to her desk with ink on her cuff and no wish to erase it; outside her warm lamp, the world had sharpened its pencils.
