🎨 How to color it

Layer the hummingbird in emerald, teal, and pearl gray, color the trumpet vine flowers coral-orange, and make the serrated leaves a deep summer green with olive shadows. Use sharp pencils for the bird’s scalloped feathers and leaf veins, then switch to light, even strokes inside the long fluted blossoms. For a lively twist, add a golden-yellow glow at each flower throat so the hovering beak seems to find hidden sweetness.

Every afternoon, Elowen counted three coral drops from the trumpet vines into one blue vial, guarding the scent like gossip under glass. One day a hummingbird zipped in, all needle-beak and emerald nerve, and drank drop one; because of that, Elowen lunged, spilled drop two onto the warm tiles, and the terrace smelled suddenly of oranges, rain, and trouble. Because of THAT, neighbors leaned over every railing, laughing and sniffing, until finally Elowen uncorked the vial and flicked the last drop skyward. The bird caught it, and joy scattered like gossip under glass.
