Under the warm tide, Vivi tapped one tentacle on her favorite smooth shell and whispered, “Seven blue bubbles, then home.” She had dared herself to count them past the tall seaweed curtains, where the water tasted faintly of salt and melon rind from picnics far above. Bubble one bobbed by her cheek. Bubble two tickled her star-speckled cap. By bubble four, the seaweed brushed her like wet ribbons, and she had to leave her shell behind so she could squeeze through.
Beyond the curtains, the water grew quiet and green. Vivi found bubbles five and six rising from a crack in the sand, but the seventh was trapped under a flat pearl pebble, trembling with a tiny chiming sound. She pushed until her tentacles ached, and the pebble tipped. Up sprang the bubble, carrying a cool silver current that curled around her and pointed the way back.
Vivi returned without her shell, but with the current humming beside her like a secret map. “Seven,” she said softly. Next time you see the bubbles around her, can you guess which one showed her the way home?
