Every night, when the orchard smelled like cold apples and damp bark, Quincy nudged one fallen leaf into the old squirrel tunnel before the wind could steal it. He had set himself a challenge: twelve perfect leaves before the crescent moon tipped west, and no one, not even the crickets, could catch him doing it.
Until one night, a whiskery mouse named Rue sneezed from behind an acorn. Because of that, Quincy rolled closer and heard the thin scratch-scratch of her bare nest. Because of that, he gave up leaf number twelve, then eleven, then the biggest maple leaf, warm from under his round side. “No peeking,” he whispered, though Rue was already asleep.
At moonset, Quincy had delivered zero leaves to the tunnel and a whole rustly blanket to Rue. The dare had changed without asking. If you find the tiny acorns near the leaf pile, keep Quincy’s secret: the orchard still smelled like cold apples and damp bark.
