Every evening, Saffron timed the patch by the slow curl of her stem, waiting for the moon to slide through the peppery-smelling vines before she smiled. To make waiting less dull, she invented Wink-Wait: no one could blink, cackle, or rattle a seed until moonlight touched the last mushroom cap. Then a striped beetle sneezed pollen into the rules, and every vine began cheating—tickling her cheeks, tugging her ribs, whispering, “Blink, pumpkin, blink.”
Because of that, Saffron held her grin so still that dew gathered in her carved corners. Because of that, the dew caught the moon early and flashed it into the mushrooms, which flashed it into the rainbow weeds, which flashed it straight back at the beetle. He blinked first, loudly and twice. At last Saffron let out one patient, wicked little wink, and the whole patch smelled like cold leaves and victory.
