Rain tapped tip-tip on Wembly’s stem as he made up a game called Puddle Hush. He wanted to step only where the water made no splash, so the sleeping snails under the mint leaves would not wake. His rubber boots went plip, plop, almost quiet. Then a moth family fluttered in, dusty and tired, looking for one dry place to rest. Wembly held his umbrella higher. “Here,” he whispered.
No one clapped. The snails kept sleeping. The moths tucked themselves beneath the umbrella’s edge, and Wembly stood in the rain with cool drops sliding down his pumpkin sides. To keep playing, he tapped one boot softly in the puddle. A round ripple opened, gentle as a blanket, showing every small creature where the quiet water was.
