Under the wavy grass, Fenn tucked a tiny pumpkin seed beneath his fin and made one small bubble-laugh: blup! The seed was plain and round, but to Fenn it was his best joke, saved from the night the moon looked like a pumpkin. He swam past the coral nubs, wiggling his bony tail, and whispered, “Wait for it.” More bubbles popped from his grin—blip, blop, bloo!—and the water smelled faintly sweet, like squash pie cooling on a windowsill.
Then the big seafloor pumpkin answered. Its triangle eyes blinked, its toothy mouth opened, and out rolled the same bubble-laugh, only huge: BLUP! The coral branches shook like tickled fingers. Even the seaweed bent over as if it had heard the funniest secret in the ocean. Fenn’s little seed had not been a seed at all, but the pumpkin’s missing giggle button. Next time you spot those round bubbles, can you tell which one is still saying blup?
