🎨 How to color it

Color the catfish warm gray, the long whiskers pale peach, the tall river grass bright green, and the smooth pebbles sandy tan. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the big fish body, then let a grown-up help with the thin grass blades and whiskers if they feel tricky. Try making the back fin and tail a slightly darker gray so this whiskered swimmer looks like it is slipping through shady water.

Under the soft river mud, Gus tucked his whiskers close and made himself a secret dare: touch the pale moonstone past the tallest grass before the minnows woke. The water smelled leafy and cool. Swish, swish went the reeds. He slipped out from his snug root hollow, belly low over the pebbles.

A crayfish snapped, “Careful there!” and Gus almost zipped home. One whisker bumped a cold stone. One grass blade tickled his nose. He paid his little price with a trembly tail and kept going. Tap! His whisker touched the moonstone. It was smooth as soap. Back in his hollow, Gus did not hide his whiskers anymore. Next time you spot those long feelers, can you keep his secret dare?
