Every day, Nell pressed mud into a little hill behind the meadow track and smoothed it with her palms. She wanted to build a birthday ramp all by herself before the truck parade rolled by, and the wet earth smelled like rain and grass.
Until one day, the first truck came early, puffing warm smoke and carrying balloons. Because of that, Nell had no paint for her ramp. Because of that, she tore shiny paper into stars and sprinkled them along the landing spot. “Jump to the stars!” she called.
The truck bounced up, soft as a drumbeat, and sailed over Nell’s hand-smoothed hill. The stars flashed under its tires. Next time you spot those party stars, see if you can tell where Nell’s muddy fingers made the birthday ramp.
