🎨 How to color it

Try deep forest green for the pines, warm cedar brown for the log ends and bark lines, and a weathered red or slate blue for the truck cab. Use sharp pencils for the tire tread, wood grain, pine needles, and narrow road ruts, then layer lightly so the engraving-style lines still show. For a subtle twist, shade the curving road in cool gray-brown while giving the log rings a golden center, as if the load is carrying late afternoon light.

At the first bend of Needlehook Road, Gus kept one thumb over the horn and the other hand steady on the wheel. The loaded timber behind him smelled of sap and rain, and every tire crunched the pale gravel with a careful, crunchy hush. He had promised himself one small honk at the curve—not a proud blast, just enough to hear his own courage bounce back from the pines.

The forest, however, had excellent timing. A gray jay landed on the hood ornament, tilted its head, and tapped the metal twice: tink, tink. Gus eased off the pedal. The bird inspected the windshield, hopped to the mirror, and dropped a stolen peanut shell neatly into the wiper groove, as if filing a report. Gus laughed so suddenly the cab window fogged. “All right,” he whispered, “you first.”

Only after the jay sprang away did Gus press the horn. The note came out modest and round, rolling between the trunks while the truck crept through the bend. Somewhere overhead, the jay answered with a raspy little chuckle. Gus drove on with sap in the air, gravel under the tires, and one thumb still smiling over the horn at the first bend of Needlehook Road.
