Every evening, Calla counted the small stars set around her glass ribs while the arcade hummed with winter feet and cinnamon steam. She wanted only to reach the final point before the lamps went blue. Then a white snow-moth struck her silver loop, not once but three times, carrying cold on its wings and a map of frost in its dust.
Because she answered, the counting broke. Because the counting broke, the star at her center sprang open like a bright gear, and the sealed door behind the hanging garlands began to turn. Wind rushed through, sharp as crushed mint. Calla shook, then let the strange moth land on her edge. “Show me,” she whispered.
Together they spun through the frost gate and scattered the trapped snow back into the arcade rafters before it could crack the glass roof. When the lamps went blue at last, Calla began again, brave enough to count the small stars.
