🎨 How to color it

Color the hamster in honey brown and cream, the budgie in turquoise with lemon-yellow face markings, the turtle shell in moss and olive greens, and the flowers in coral and violet. Use sharp pencils for the tiny shell plates, feather bands, leaf panels, and flower petals, keeping darker color tucked close to the black lead lines. For a stained-glass glow, blend pale blue into the background panes and let the two corner suns fade from butter yellow to warm orange.

Every day, Orla crossed the glasshouse tiles at noon, inching under the hot stripe of sun until each plate of her shell flashed once. She had set herself the quiet challenge after winter: no plate left dull, no step hurried. The air smelled of damp leaves and warm stone; overhead, a budgie clicked his beak like tiny scissors, and a hamster rustled in the vine basket.

Until one day the sun broke through the colored window in crooked pieces. Because of that, Orla’s shell filled with not flashes but shapes: a curl, a flower, a bright little path. Because of that, the budgie tilted his head, the hamster leaned close, and together they read what one shell could not hold. “It says, come see,” whispered the budgie.

At last Orla stopped chasing a private shine and stood very still, carrying the whole small invitation on her back. The joy was too large for one shell, so she shared the hot stripe of sun.
